Sony recently shocked everyone by announcing the PS5 Pro, priced at $699. This has excited many GTA 6 fans, who are hoping the new console will run the game at 4K and 60 frames per second (fps).

However, a well-known tech expert believes this might not happen.

In an interview with IGN on September 13, 2024, Richard Leadbetter, the technology editor at Digital Foundry, shared his thoughts.

He explained that GTA 6 might not run at 60 fps on the PS5 Pro with the highest graphics settings.

Leadbetter said that if the regular PS5 can’t run games at 60 fps in Graphics Mode, the PS5 Pro probably won’t either.

The issue is likely with the CPU, not the GPU. The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the regular PS5, and most of the improvements are focused on the GPU.

He gave an example of a game called Space Marine 2, which can’t reach 60 fps even in Performance Mode on the regular PS5.

While the PS5 Pro will have better graphics, it probably won’t hit 60 fps because the game’s complex simulations are the problem, not the graphics.

When asked if GTA 6 could run at 60 fps on the PS5 Pro, Leadbetter was doubtful. He explained that GTA games are known for being “simulation-heavy,” and it’s unlikely that the PS5 Pro will manage 60 fps.

Every GTA game has been locked at 30 fps, and they sometimes even struggle to reach that. So if the base PS5 can’t do it, the PS5 Pro might not either.

Sony officially revealed the PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, along with some impressive features:

  • 2TB SSD
  • 2-3x faster ray tracing
  • AI upscaling
  • PS5 Game Boost Mode
  • Aiming for 60 fps in Graphics Mode
  • Compatible with all PS5 accessories

While it’s not clear if GTA 6 will reach 60 fps on the PS5 or PS5 Pro, Rockstar Games has a history of pushing hardware to its limits.

Since GTA 6 is set to release in fall 2025, there’s still time to optimize the game. Fans should stay hopeful until we see actual gameplay on both consoles.
